Introduced at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, the new Volkswagen Bulli is a modern trip down memory lane. The Bulli concept dates back to the 1950s but comes equipped with 21st century features and serious horse power with zero emissions.
Back in the late 1990s, Volkswagen received high acclaim for their updated version of the Beetle. The iconic model was updated to more modern style with sleeker lines and other whimsical additions. And the new 2011 Bulli should see the same results.
The Bulli maintains traditional short overhangs and a refrigerator-like, window-lined body of the classic model. But Volkswagen has replaced the Bulli's rear mounted four-cylinder engine with an 85-kilowatt electric motor that gives power to the front wheels. This new design requires a hood, which eliminates the classic, flat front fascia of older models.
The motor is enhanced by a lithium-ion battery that can hold 40 kWh, which translates into a range of up to 186.4 miles on a single battery chargeāa high value for an electric car. And with a top running speed of 87 mph, this micro-Microbus can go from 0 to 60 mph in 11.5 seconds. The Bulli's range and driving performance are compatible for distance driving but also for most commuters and other recreational activities.
This van is designed to be highly efficient: At 156 inches long, 68.4 inches wide and 66 inches tall, the Bulli makes great use of its large track width and overall length. And thanks to a flat floor, the interior cabin can accommodate six passengers in two rows of seats.
But that's not all. The Bulli also offers a built-in iPad support as a multifunctional control station for music as well as other sources of navigation, information and entertainment, as well as the Bluetooth hands-free telephone system.
